What CBJ is and where it is
Cabo Rojo Airport (CBJ) is a planned international airport in Pedernales province, at the far south-western tip of the Dominican Republic, near the border with Haiti. It takes its name from the Cabo Rojo coastal area, a stretch of bay and port land close to the airport site.
The airport is being developed to serve the wider Pedernales and Bahoruco region, an area that today has limited air access compared with the east and north coasts of the country. Its planned role is to give the south-west a dedicated gateway rather than relying solely on Barahona's smaller airport or the long road journey from Santo Domingo.
Cabo Rojo and Pedernales: the geography around the airport
Pedernales town, the provincial capital, sits closest to the airport site and functions today as the region's administrative and commercial centre. It borders Haiti and has an existing crossing point used for cross-border trade.
Cabo Rojo itself is a coastal and port area with a documented mining and industrial history tied to bauxite export, alongside a separately proposed tourism development along its bay. South of Cabo Rojo lies Bahía de las Águilas, a protected beach inside Jaragua National Park, reached today only by boat from La Cueva or by an unpaved track.
Inland from the coast, the region includes the Sierra de Bahoruco mountains, the Hoyo de Pelempito viewpoint, and further north the Lago Enriquillo basin — the largest lake in the Caribbean and the lowest point in the country, reached via Duvergé and Jimaní.
The planned February 2027 opening
A February 2027 target has been publicly stated for CBJ's opening. As with any large infrastructure project, a stated target date can shift, so we treat it as the current plan rather than a guarantee, and we update this page if the timeline changes.
What is not yet confirmed includes the airport's operational start date being final, the airlines and routes that will use it, its terminal capacity, and the ground transport infrastructure that will connect it to Pedernales, Cabo Rojo and the wider region.

How travellers reach the region today
Before CBJ opens, travellers reach Pedernales province by road from Barahona, itself served by María Montez International Airport (BRX), or by the longer route from Santo Domingo, served by Las Américas International Airport (SDQ). Both are existing, currently operating airports, distinct from the planned CBJ.
The coastal highway connects Barahona to Pedernales via Paraíso and Enriquillo, while the Lago Enriquillo basin is reached inland via Duvergé and Jimaní. These are the confirmed routes in use today, independent of the airport project.
How transfers are being planned
